All children explore manipulation, even in the most loving homes. All children explore control, even in the most loving homes.
Growing up, I had the blessing of a loving mother and father, however, I have always struggled with manipulation and control. If I’m honest with myself, my need for control is at the root of much of the anger and disappointment that I experience today. Yes, that outburst earlier at home, that was because the house (and everyone in it) weren’t performing as I wanted. Yes, when I got uptight at work it was because I wasn’t in control of that situation.
Oftentimes, for our children, hurt children, children with histories of neglect and abuse and trauma, manipulation and control becomes a survival strategy. In the video below, Dr. Karyn Purvis and Michael Monroe offer sound advice for parents who are experiencing manipulation and control.

When we provide a healing home for our children, in time they will learn to trust us and in turn place their trust in the One who has always been in control.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil,
to give you a future and a hope.
